๐Ÿงฑ LEGO Transmission Electron Microscope

Build a detailed model of a TEM and learn how electron microscopes work โ€” one brick at a time!

๐Ÿ”ฌ What is a Transmission Electron Microscope?

A Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) is one of the most powerful microscopes ever invented. Instead of using light like a regular microscope, it shoots a beam of electrons through an ultra-thin sample.

Because electrons have a much shorter wavelength than light, TEMs can see things that are incredibly tiny โ€” even individual atoms! Scientists use TEMs to study viruses, cell structures, nanomaterials, and more.

๐Ÿ”ง Assembly Instructions

1

Build the Base Platform

Start with a sturdy 8x16 base using dark gray 2x4 plates. This represents the heavy vibration-isolation table that real TEMs sit on.

2

Construct the Column

Stack 2x4 and 2x2 bricks vertically to create the tall column. A real TEM column houses the electron gun at the top and the imaging system below.

3

Add the Electron Gun

At the very top, place the yellow round plates to represent the electron source. In a real TEM, electrons are emitted from a heated filament or a field emission source.

4

Install the Lens System

Add the trans-clear round bricks at intervals down the column. These represent the electromagnetic lenses (condenser, objective, and projector lenses) that focus the electron beam.

5

Create the Sample Chamber

In the middle of the column, leave a small gap and add a movable platform. This is where the specimen holder goes in a real TEM โ€” a tiny grid holding your ultra-thin sample.

6

Build the Viewing Screen

At the bottom, add a flat plate area with light-colored tiles. This represents the fluorescent screen or digital camera that captures the final image.

7

Add the Control Panel

On one side of the base, create a small panel with colorful tiles representing buttons and knobs. Real TEM operators use these to control magnification, focus, and beam alignment.
